This still was operated by some enterprising residents of Yankeetown around
the 1930 time-frame. The exact date of the picture is not known. The young
man leaning against the tree is my grandfather, K. Runnels. I'm not sure
who the others in the picture are, but perhaps someone viewing the web page
could identify them. |

1956 I think, Post card picture of the famous Yankeetown "Glass House" owned by the Eugene Knotts family. They threw no stones! Great folks, always glad to let us show our relatives and visitors the home. I remember stopping to admire the Glass House when we would take a ride on the River. Absolutely Beautiful! Added by Evelyn Meeks, 29 August 2002 at 0849 Christmas in Yankeetown always meant a trip down by Gene and Norma Knotts glass house at 1 Genie Court. They would take a large cedar tree, cut it in half, put one half in the house and mount the other half on the roof. It looked like it went right through the roof. If you were on their Christmas card list you got a picture of the decorated 2 story tree on a post card. Life then and now is great!!! Added by Sally Price, 2 January 2003 at 0140 My wife and I are purchasing the "Glass House" at 1 Genie Court. I am very interested in the history of the home. I would love to find an old post card like this one to frame, or at least to scan. If anyone knows anything of the history of the "Glass House" we would love to hear it. Was there an architect, and if so, who? Were there any other customs regarding the home in addition to the Christmas tree through the roof? I would love to hear any stories that involve the home. We have fallen in love with Yankeetown, and any information you can provide us would really be appreciated. Thanks. Added by John & Nancy Smith, 18 April 2003 at 0032 I spent many a happy hour in that house as a child. Gene and Norma were great friends my parents. Jane and Elton Jones of Ocala, Florida. Before I was born my dad was principal of the high school in Yankeetown. Then principal of Ocala High School. I used to go down for long weekends and weeks in the summer in the late 50's with Ruth Fohl the councilor at the Ocala High. She was great friends of my parents also. I loved playing in the piano shaped pool. Gene used to take me out fishing in the gulf in a big boat that he built himself We used to fish right off the platform that hung out over the river also. Norma used to bake bread almost every day and we all enjoyed eating it fresh out of the oven. I seem to remember the only rooms without glass walls were the bath rooms. Norma tried to teach me how to play the organ they had in the livingroom, but I had no musical talent. I remember their old house where their children grew up. My older sister and brother were friends of their children. I hope you love the house as much as I did. I always dreamed of having a home like that some day. Best wishes and happiness always, Kay Added by Kay Jones Voge, 20 May 2003 at 2130 |

USCG_station-houseboat_"Yankeetown_Fl"_ 1977_John Lawlor I remember this Coast Guard station when it was first brought to Yankeetown. One soul lived there for six months with no electricity, only plumbing and alot of candles. Added by Richard Post, 8 April 2001 at 2133 That would be Kim Turnidge of Utah, Richard. He left shortly after trashing his bike and hurting his back. The houseboat was initially moored upriver against the south bank for a spell. Added by Eric Weber, 17 April 2001 at 1221 Kim was my best friend and a Mormon. We had a nice station when I was there-1977. Alot of good memories. Added by John Lawlor, 5 August 2002 at 1151 I was stationed with Kim from 1975-1976. He was a cool dude. Had a Yamaha 400 bike and a Triumph TR-6.This photo brings back a lot of memories Added by David Barker, 27 September 2002 at 1342 I remember the cook "Cookie" on the boat and Chief Sam Harris. Sue Cassady and I ate a lot of fried chicken in that kitchen when the chief wasn't there. How about the Saint Bernard!!! I loved those good ole carefree days!!! Added by Sally Price, 2 January 2003 at 0116 I remember the way the Coast Guard took care of Yankeetown Boat,CO. My parents could always count on them in times of crisis such as when we had the major fire at the marina in the 80's and when we had another boat fire. Without them I don't know what we would have done. Thanks guys you are the best. Added by Sue Tillman, 8 August 2003 at 1122 Does anyone remember anything about Sue Tillman's post about the fire at the marinas? I'm trying to piece together the history and dates of the marinas. Please email me. Thanks. Added by Jeremy, 7 July 2005 at 0734 |
