Yankeetown School is located between Yankeetown and Inglis, Florida. The school has been in operation for 75 years and currently provides pre-kindergarten through 8th grade for around 200 students. The Yankeetown school web site is http://yankeetown.levyschools.org/r/home.

Yankeetown School serves a small-town, rural area. Yet the school has a vision for preparing students for a broader world.

Mrs. Lovely’s sixth grade studies geography. In September and October they started studying the Middle East.

In September 2011, Mrs. Lovely coordinated with members of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Forward Headquarters J6 Directorate for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence at Al Udeid Air Base just outside of Doha, Qatar to have the CENTCOM J6 Office in Charge (OIC) to judge an essay contest.

The topic of the contest was “The Nation of Qatar and the CENTCOM Mission.”

At the CENTCOM Forward HQ, the team was excited to be included in the contest.

These are the men and women who keep the CENTCOM Forward HQ ready for action.

The team assembled outside the compound, posing for the official picture for the Yankeetown 6th graders.

Mrs. Lovely’s class posed for pictures to send back to CENTCOM Forward HQ.

Essays were sent to LTC Walt Carter at CENTCOM Forward HQ on 28 October.
LTC Carter selected the winner: Tricia Ruttinger!

Mrs. Lovely, Tricia, and Andy

Andy visited Yankeetown School the day before Veterans’ Day to present Tricia with the grand prize and to talk with fourth through eighth grade students about geography, traveling, and military service. More pictures are here.

The next generation of Yankeetown School essay writers are already lining up…

Andy,
Few people would imagine, let alone take the time to do, an event like this. You should be proud of the accomplishment.
Scott
Thank you so much! A wonderful experience for us as well as the children!
(also love the piano and the budding Mozart!)
